As the
boys began coming home from war in the mid-1940's, the citizens of the ranching
hamlet of Driftwood began gathering for community suppers. Then in 1956 these
gatherings formalized into the
Driftwood Community Improvement Club. Through the Driftwood Community
Improvement Club the
tradition of these monthly gatherings has continued, fostering friendships
and a strong community.
The Driftwood Community Improvement
Club meets in the Driftwood Community Center. This historic building is the
focal point of our community located in Hays County between Dripping Springs
and Wimberley. The building itself was built in 1920 to replace a barn-like
structure which had been used as a school since 1905. Senior Driftwood
citizens still recall their school days spent there. After the Driftwood
schools consolidated with the Buda schools in 1940 the building was given to
the community of Driftwood for a community center. The Driftwood Community
Improvement Club administers the remodeling, maintenance
and general up-keep of the building. Today the Driftwood Community Center is
the site of monthly community potluck suppers, our annual Heritage Day
festivities, family reunions, wedding receptions, service club meetings,
quilting bees and many other activities which enhance the community spirit
of Driftwood.
In 1986, the first
Driftwood Heritage Day, was held to celebrate the
Texas Sesquicentennial. This event
is the annual fundraiser for the Driftwood Community Improvement Club and
the continued maintenance and restoration of the Driftwood Community Center.
Due to a shortage of volunteers in recent years, Heritage Day has been
scaled back to a free BBQ dinner for the community with donations accepted.
